Les Elliott, Business Manager, Glass Division, said; "The production plant in Germany puts environmental concerns high on its list of priorities and we are keen to share our philosophy and knowledge with our customers. Ultimately looking after the environment benefits us all. We are able to work with our customers and offer advice on how they can reduce their levels of waste in production. Many have seen considerable improvements with cost savings by implementing the recommendations which have been suggested by our Technical Service Team. There will always be some unusable material in the form of remnants which requires disposal and this is where this scheme can help." In order for companies to benefit from this service it is imperative that the sealant residue is not contaminated by general waste or rubbish.

Kommerling UK responds to market with a fresh approach and new initiatives.

Kommerling UK responds to market with a fresh approach and new initiatives. image

In response to changes it is seeing in both the IG market and the wider construction sector Kommerling UK has announced a number of new business initiatives. Phil Turley, who has over 30 years experience of the glass and glazing market will take on a consultants role and act as a conduit for clients, helping them to recognise the problems they face and then to identify the right solution. He will also work with Chris Davis and the R&D team, based in Germany and help them to communicate their work, with regards to facades, as architects to continue to push the boundaries of how glass is used in modern construction. Alongside this the company has established a pan-European Liquid Composites group, that will be looking at how its developing knowledge and expertise of liquid composites can be used across the PV/solar sector, the wind sector, wider manufacturing and in the development of new solutions for modern building facades and structural glazing. Leading this activity in the UK is Chris Davis, formerly of Glazeguard and a recognised industry expert on glass composites. As part of this role Chris has already established close ties with the Facade Technology Research Group at Cambridge University and is talking to a number of leading main contractors, including Arups and Eckerlsey O'Callaghan about other long term projects. At the same time Lee Foulkes is taking the lead in managing the merger of both the CIL products and staff, following Kommerling's acquisition of the company last year. With the CIL brand well established in its key markets there are no plans to change the product names but work is underway to align the positioning and develop one website for all products and application information. Les Elliott, who joined the company in 2010, will take on a more national role, focussing on both existing and new customers. With new legislation surrounding the removal of mercury from polyurethane products due in 2017, several customers are having to review their production systems and seek alternative products or approaches. 'One of the biggest challenges that the IG manufacturers face is that two-part Polyurethane components which don't contain mercury take longer to cure; this means that they require more space and time for their production, both of which has a cost implication. Kommerling can provide solutions that will help to alleviate some of this problem. With increased customer awareness of environmental and waste management issues, Les is also spearheading the promotion of the company's sealant remnants recycling scheme.

Kodiguard liquid composite used on repairs to historic 'Libertas' monument in Estonian capital image

Kommerling's liquid composite partner in Estonia, Andrese Klaasi, is manufacturing and installing replacement panels for the famous War of Independence Victory Monument, located in Freedom Square,Tallinn, Estonia. Illuminated from inside, the structure, known as "Liberates", provides a stunning centrepiece to the ancient capital city. Damage to the monument over the last four years has led to the replacement of six panels with another due for installation in the near future. Each panel is two metres long and varies in width between 650mm to 950mm. The glass has a depth of 50mm so the weight of the panels varies from 160kg up to 240kg. The panels have a strict specification covering the, thick, heavily decorative, tempered and textured laminated glass and are manufactured in the Andrese Klaasi AS plant , where the Ködiguard liquid composite is applied. The passive curing and complicity with textured surfaces and asymmetrical substrates of the composite makes it the ideal product for this unusual project. Upon completion each panel will then be structurally bolted to the memorial.

This specialist colourless liquid composite is specifically designed for applications where the highest reduction of ultra violet light transmission across the full UV light spectrum is required without effecting quality of naturally transmitted light. Emma Telford, textile conservator, explains more; "Historic textiles always need to be protected from ultra-violet light, the most damaging wavelength in the spectrum for textiles. UV filters applied directly to glass, whether on windows or in frames, are a useful tool in the limited repertoire of available methods to block this particular type of light."

Kommerling UK supplies Residence 9 fabricators with "direct glazing system". image

Kommerling UK has announced that it is supplying 20 of Residence 9's fabricators with its direct glazing system. Residence 9 is rapidly establishing itself in the market as a niche, high value PVCu window system which replicates quality timber window frames by using the latest composite materials and construction methods. Dan Gill, Managing Director of Residence 9, said; "We have been working with Kommerling for some time now and their support and know how has been vital in helping us to bring this new system to the market. By using the Kommerling system our network of over 20 skilled fabricators are able to manufacture aesthetically pleasing windows which not only look great but also meet enhanced standards and the highest levels of thermal efficiency." The main Kommerling materials used are Kodiglaze SDG with Kommerling primers and cleaners. Les Elliott, Business Development Manager at Kommerling, explained more about the benefits of the Direct Glazing system; "By eliminating the need for steel or aluminium reinforcement within the PVCu profiles and replacing it with a bonded system, the thermal properties of each glazed unit (either double or triple) are greatly enhanced, which improves the overall window energy rating (WER). In addition when the glass is bonded directly into the frame, there is a significant improvement in the levels of security. The bond also reduces the amount of water which enters the window frame drainage system, resulting in improvements in both air tightness, weathering resistance and rigidity of the unit.

Kommerling refines its expansive ranges of liquid composites

11 March 2013

Kommerling refines its expansive ranges of liquid composites image

Koemmerling Chemische Fabrik GMBH is refining and repositioning its Kodiphone and Kodiguard range of liquid composite products. The revitalised range will be rebranded and packaged and customers will also benefit from training and support packages to ensure that they fully understand not only the benefits of the products, but also how best to use them. Chris Davis, Composites Manager for the company, explained more; "We have recognised that in the past some composite products have not lived up to expectations. This may have been the fault of the product or its incorrect application. Our new approach builds on our strong technical expertise whilst recognising that our customers need support to understand how and when to use the products and the best way of incorporating them into both their existing processes and how they might allow them to extend their offerings." The revised range will be referred to as liquid composites, which better describes the nature of the products. One aspect that has been overlooked in the past are the environmental credentials of this type of approach, both in its initial production (handled at the company's European manufacturing plant in Germany), and its later application. Kommerling has been able to reduce the carbon footprint of the production process and features such as natural curing, which requires no additional power is just one example range's enhanced 'green' credentials. When used in applications such as bullet resistant windscreens for vehicles, the significant reduction in weight in comparison to other solutions currently on the market has a knock on effect in reducing fuel consumption.

'Sticking with Silicone' This article was first published in The Fabricator August 2012

26 September 2012

Silicone sealant has no gas retention capability so it is somewhat difficult to produce gas filled insulating glass sealed with silicone. However, there is a growing demand for such units for structural glazing facades. The gas will only stay inside the insulating glass units with an absolutely tight primary, butyl, seal - for conventional edge bond with spacer profiles a nearly impossible task. With the thermoplastic edge bond Kodispace 4SG, Kommerling reckons it has succeed in squaring the circle.

Kommerling rebrands leading product Kodimelt TPS to Kodispace with immediate effect.

17 September 2012

Kommerling UK, announced today that with immediate effect its warm edge product, formerly known as Kodimelt TPS will now been called Kodispace. The renaming is designed to help differentiate the products from other similar systems that are in the glazing market. Phil Turley, glass product manager for Kommerling UK explained more; "The new name reflects the use of the product as a replacement for the more conventional spacer types and is seen as a logical link in our product range for warm edge systems. We are keen to stress that the change is in name only. There are no changes in formulation, properties or performance of Kodispace but fabricators and other customers should be aware that all relevant data and test reports are renamed as Kodispace." The Koemmerling warm edge family of products now includes: 1. Kodispace as thermoplastic spacer with polysulphide edge seal for permanent gastight insulating glass units. 2. Kodispace 4SG as warm edge solution for facades and applications where the product will be used in conjunction with silicone edge seals. Anyone requiring more information on the full range of products or a copy of the updated brochure can visit www.kommerlinguk.com where brochures for all Kommerling products can be downloaded or contact them direct on Tel: 01895 465600

Kommerling continues its close partnership with Cornwall Glass as another branch opens in the south west.

28 May 2012

Leading sealant supplier, Kommerling UK, has strengthened its ties with Cornwall Glass by signing an agreement to supply Polysulphide Insulating Glass Sealant GD116NA & primary seal Naftotherm BU-S for use on the company's new production line. The new production facilities, which are based around a Reinhart machine, have been installed at Cornwall Glass' newest branch, M5 Glass Centre, which is located in Highbridge, Somerset. Phil Turley, Business Manager, Glass Products at Kommerling, said; "We have been supplying Cornwall Glass for over 10 years and are delighted to be working with them to help ensure the success of this latest investment. Despite what we hear in the media about the general economic climate, Cornwall Glass' dynamic approach to business is helping the company to go from strength to strength in the south west." "With current legislation, the Green Deal and an increasing consumer awareness of the issues surrounding building and energy efficiency we believe that there is a real opportunity for a company able to produce double and triple glazed units for both the commercial and domestic market," commented Paul Garrard, director at M5 Glass Centre. "The installation of the new production line has gone very well and we have already seen our first units roll out the door."
